Owen is about to kick off Mod 3 classes. For 1st years, this means balancing another round of core classes with internship applications. For 2nd years, this means only one more semester of school before heading back to the real world. But for 100% of Owen students, this means only one thing…we are halfway through the Clash of the Classes!
Clash of the Classes (COTC) is a competition that pits 1st years vs. 2nd years vs. the MAcc/MSF (master of accounting and finance) students to see what class can do the most good in the Nashville community. The competition is managed by 100% Owen – a club that all students are members of – which promotes and organizes community service, fundraising, and donation opportunities. This year, Owen students selected Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee as the recipient of all fundraising efforts, and we have already raised $3.6K this year.
Do not be fooled by the ultimate goal of the competition. Yes, the competition is all about positively impacting the Nashville community while we are here for 2 short, glorious years…but MBA students are extremely competitive, and this year’s clash has been nothing short of intense. Just check out the COTC Kick Off video (don’t mind the noise, we filmed it during Kegs):
Students earned points for their class last semester by participating in…

Additionally, students, faculty and staff have served 12 organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee, Feed the Children, Second Harvest Food Bank, the Edgehill Center, SaddleUp!, American Red Cross, Teach For America, Junior Diabetes Research Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Nashville Humane Association, Nashville Union Rescue Mission, Best Buddies, and KIPP Schools. Through these organizations, Owen students have contributed over 600 hours of community service.
That brings us to now. The 2nd years are currently in the lead, but spring activities including a Charity Silent Auction, the St. Patrick’s Day Party Fundraiser, a spring blood drive, and the Charity Owen Olympics leave the 1st years and MAcc/MSF students a fighting chance to win this clash.
…and if you’re not first, you’re last.
