Learning from the Oracle: Owen visits with Warren Buffett

Business school is bursting with unique forums in which students have access to some of the greatest and brightest minds in modern industry. These standout moments can be pivotal points in shaping the next generation of business creativity and innovation. Prior to Spring Break, 20 Owen students were treated to just such an opportunity—the rare chance to sit down for a Q&A with one of the world’s greatest investors, philanthropists, and public figures, Mr. Warren Buffett.  The lucky group traveled to Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska, arriving in tact despite a major snowstorm that threatened the event (and precluded other chosen schools from making the journey).

The trip was a brainchild of Owen finance professor Philip Woodlief, who had reached out to Buffett through a personal connection to convey Vanderbilt’s interest in visiting the investor. With the meeting arranged, preparations began months in advance, with students doing their research by reading up on Buffett’s philosophies on investing, politics, and life. The group convened on multiple occasions to formulate a list of poignant questions to pose to the “Oracle of Omaha”, trying to focus on themes that had not been addressed in the litany of Buffett materials already available.

Fall International Trip: Japan 2012

Over the Fall Break from classes, a group of 30 Owen students went on a school-sponsored International trip to visit Japan.  This is an account of the trip from one of the second-years who enjoyed the trip.

Day 1 (Thursday):
Technically, the trip began on this night where everyone first gathered at our hotel in Fukuyama but a few of us who arrived the day before in the city of Osaka where we toured several landmarks such as Osaka Castle, Tsuutenkaku Tower, and Shitennou Temple before we took a bullet train to meet everyone in Fukuyama.

The Case for Case Competitions

In my time at Owen I’ve had the opportunity to compete in 4 case competitions. I would encourage all students to take part in at least one case competition. The depth of learning and the experience gained are completely worth the effort. The competitions I’ve done have all been real estate-related, but I’m sure that my takeaways hold true for just about any competition.

Deep Learning – Most cases in business school, with a few exceptions, are read, analyzed, discussed, and put to bed in just a few hours. It might have taken your group a week to write that paper, but how many hours during that week did you actually spend thinking about that case? Two? Maybe Three?

A few weeks ago I spent just about every waking hour during a 72 hour span dissecting, discussing, and analyzing a real estate development case (and there weren’t very many ‘sleeping hours’ during that time) Nowhere else in business school I have spent as much time on a single project. It forced me to explore concepts and learn new things about real estate development which I wouldn’t have learned anywhere else at Owen.

Doing Business in Brazil – Recap

We’re finally back in the states and I once again have a reliable internet connection. Here are some photo highlights that I missed posting:

Last Monday, our first visit was to Petrobas, Brazil’s government owned oil and gas company.

Fun fact (from wikipedia): Petrobas is the largest company in Latin America by market capitalization and revenue, and the largest company headquartered in the Southern Hemisphere by market value.

Petrobas meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

To bookend our trip, our last meeting was at Coteminas with Josué Gomes da Silva, Owen ’89. He is not only the President of Coteminas, but he is also on the board for Petrobas. This was definitely the highlight of the trip.

Fun fact: Before meeting with us, Josué had a lunch meeting with the Finance Minister of Brazil.

Mr. Josué Gomes da Silva is the fifth person from the left in the front row.
