Exploring Nashville: Haunted Halloween

There are a number of fun activities to take part in in Nashville, and Halloween is always a great time to get out and enjoy what the city has to offer.  Recently a group of 2nd years headed out to Honeysuckle Hill Farm’s Haunted Woods and Corn Maze to scare ourselves silly in celebration of Halloween.  We caravanned out to the location and immediately started getting into the fall spirit, jumping around on the “Corn Popper,” a giant trampoline populated entirely by children until we showed up.  The kids jumping around us definitely outlasted us on that, although Taylor did succeed in “cracking the egg” with Skylar.

Next, we made our way to the Corn Maze, studied the map, and then headed in, but somehow the maze didn’t seem to correspond to the map we’d seen.  After wandering around for 30 minutes or so we finally made our way back out to the maze entrance, where we were told we’d been lost in the “kiddie” maze the entire time and hadn’t even made it into the actual adult maze pictured on the map, oops.

Owen Peeps

I believe that the people who comprise a person’s immediate environment determine whether a place or situation is fulfilling. For example, because I was with some great friends, I once had an amazing two days stuck in a car in a snowstorm. Additionally, when I think back to my undergraduate and professional experiences, I have no idea what grades I got on which tests but I do recall the classes with dynamic professors, being immature with my buddies, and working late nights on projects with my colleagues. At Vanderbilt, I have already started, and hope to continue, creating the same types of memories.

Additionally, there have been plenty of times in my life when I remember thinking, “Please don’t make me work with ______ (insert name here)”.  That thought has crossed my mind at work, at college, and while playing awkward family games during the holidays, but not while at Owen. For the rest of our lives, we will be working in groups, and most of the time, we will have no control over their composition. It is reassuring to know that, at least for the next two years, I will not have to worry about who else is on my team. Everyone I have met at Owen is, in some unique way, smarter than me, and I thoroughly enjoy that feeling. Here at Owen, everyone wants to learn about how smart others are instead of competing or showcasing how smart they are.

Owen Podcast Series: Ben Blackwell, Third Man Records

We at the Owen Podcast Series tried not to veer into “annoying fanboy” territory, but we got dangerously close as we welcomed Ben Blackwell, the Pinball Wizard and Director of Operations at Nashville’s illustrious Third Man Records, to the show. Ben, a music industry “lifer”, has been a drummer in The Dirtbombs since he was 17 and joined Jack White’s label to direct their vinyl production operations in 2009. He shares his opinions on vinyl’s current resurgence in popularity, the innovation that seems to constantly stream out of Third Man, and what we can expect from the label in 2011.
