A Day in the Life of a Second Year MBA Marketing Student
Thursday
7:00am: Wake Up (significantly later than on M/W, when I have an 8am class)
7:45am: Do the dishes, eat breakfast and drink my coffee while checking my email and my to-do list for the day. Read the news. Look at LinkedIn, and notice a change to LinkedIn profiles – email Anne Marie (our resident LinkedIn expert) to ask her opinion on the change.
8:30am: Head to school. Do research for my Pricing team presentation. We’re presenting on the topic of Luxury Apparel and the pricing strategies that are employed in that industry.
9:40am: Pricing Strategies Class. There’s a student team presentation on Dynamic Restaurant pricing, followed by discussion. Afterwards, there is a guest speaker on conjoint analysis related to pricing, and a discussion on how Apple determined its price for the new iPad Mini (definitely not through conjoint).
11:10am: Grab a snack downstairs from the Mapco 810 Café
11:20am: Strategic Alignment of Human Capital Class. Discussion on different frameworks for Strategic HR and how they relate to a case we had just read.

#OwenBowl 2012
Owen had its first ever Super Bowl Twitter Party on Sunday night, using the to collect our various musings on the best and worst of the night. It was a fun exercise and collected a nice diversity of thought. For example, after Doug opined that the Cars.com “creepy second head representing the buyer’s confidence” commercial did not exactly warm his heart to the brand, I shared my differing opinion.
While exchanges like this happened all night, they were noteworthy not so much for the quality of their content (in something as subjective as this, we are all amateurs and our opinions are valued as such) but more for the fact that these exchanges were happening at all. And they were, all over the internet. According to Peter Kafka at All Things D, there were somewhere between 11 and 16 million social media comments during the game. While the increasing number of platforms make such estimates increasingly difficult to gauge, all estimates point to a substantial uptick year-over-year. , the final three minutes of the game saw an average of 10,000 tweets per second, peaking at 12,233 and setting a new record for the site.

BrandWeek 2010: Marketing with Social Media
BrandWeek is a three day short course of lectures and group activities for Owen students who participate centering around the topic of how companies manage their brands. It is an exceptional chance for students with and without marketing backgrounds to learn more about working in marketing and brand management positions. Our focus this year for BrandWeek was social media and how it’s changing the way products are marketed today. During the week students were broken into 5 teams of six with the ultimate goal of preparing a social media marketing strategy for the newly released car, the Ford Fiesta around Vanderbilt and the greater Nashville area. The team that won will implement their marketing strategy in module 2 with a total project budget of $15,000. Teams were judged by a representative from Team Detroit/Retail First, a company that markets Ford products in the region. Our mediators for all of BrandWeek’s speakers and planned events were Associate Professor of Marketing at Owen, Steve Hoeffler and an executive with White Oaks Brands. Professor Hoeffler was a fantastic person to run the program because of his insightful, thought provoking questions he posed to the speakers, and students throughout the three days. The representative from White Oaks offered a wealth of insights from his vast industry experience as a former Senior Vice President of Brown-Forman Corporation who was in charge of the Jack Daniels’ global marketing strategy.
