Thanksgiving: Owen Style

Ah Thanksgiving… the start of an entire season of fun with friends and family (and a break from class!).  Before we all took off to parts near and far in celebration of Turkey Day, the Owen Culinary Society hosted its own Thanksgiving Dinner, inviting the members of Owen Bridges (Owen’s group that pairs international students with domestic students to help introduce them to US culture) so they could experience their own traditional Thanksgiving meal, Southern-style.  OCS members each brought a dish or two to represent their favorite T-Day foods.  Being a very heavily Southern group, you can be sure that many of us were facing food comas afterwards.

Patrick (who, along with his wife, was kind enough to let us crash his house for the event) pulled out the deep fryers so we could all try fried turkey.  That was a first for me, and something I’m glad I got to experience – I’ll definitely be “casually” suggesting that to friends for future Thanksgivings.

Queering the MBA

Editors’ note: It is common for students to attend business school for the purpose of making a major career change, and there are myriad programs and support staff in place to help facilitate this sort of transition. But a second year at Owen is undergoing a much more profound change. OwenBloggers is proud to present the first in a series of lifestyle pieces written by a student chronicling her experience as a transgender student at a major American business school.

It started with a long, uphill walk under the glare of the late morning Atlanta sun. Wearing a black suit might have been a mistake, especially since it was unseasonably hot for the end of March. But the heat wasn’t why I was moving slower than molasses – I was walking in three-inch heels to the hotel where I’d interview as female for the first time. This was the only interview attire I’d brought with me since I didn’t want to give myself the option to chicken out, and I was starting to question whether that was the right decision.

This I Know: Alumni Insights from Ann Dominick ’82

Ann Dominick is an Owen alumnus from the Class of ’82. Her professional roles have included CFO and Vice President of Finance in small and large companies, domestic and international. She has consulted in government and industry. Ann spent ten years at MCI and started her career with PriceWaterhouse. Her MBA from Owen was in Finance and Accounting. She is a CPA, licensed in Virginia and originally in Louisiana. Her Bachelors in Economics was conferred by Smith College, Northampton Massachusetts.

Last week I attended an alumni meet and greet for prospective Owen students in Washington D.C. There was a ton of energy in the room as our alums spoke excitedly about their current endeavors. I came away with the desire to share some of the thoughts and experiences in the time since I graduated from Owen. My 30th reunion is this spring and since we’ll all be gathering soon, I’ve invited my fellow alumni to share their own insights in a new series of posts on OwenBloggers.

Taking a famous line from someone else, “This I know”:

One of the things that surprised me about business school is how applicable a lot of the frameworks we’ve learned are in unpacking and processing a lot of things related to transition. For example, lately I’ve felt that people (mostly strangers) seem to look and/or stare at me a lot more than they did before. Instead of the socially acceptable “I’m going to look at you and then look away,” I get something more along the lines of, ‘wait, what?’ that comes with an apparently instinctive second look that… nags at me. I usually assume it is because they can’t figure out my gender, which surprises/bothers them so much that they briefly forget how their mamas raised them – but being kind of nerdy, I try to figure out what’s going on.
