Graduation Day!
OwenBloggers would like to say “Congratulations!” to everyone in the class of 2012 for a job well done completing their MBA. High fives all around! While we can all agree that it has gone by waaaay too fast, today also comes with a great sense of accomplishment and pride.
Best of luck to everyone in their future endeavours. Now let the celebrations begin!

JJ’s Market and Café
Website: N/A. Here is their page
Address:
Hours: They just scaled their hours back a bit: Mon-Fri – 7a-11p; Sat – 8a-11a; Sun – 10a-9p
Seating: Lots of seating with a ton of tables as well as comfy chairs/couches
Outdoor Seating: Yes, kind of. Nothing to get excited about.
Selected Prices: Small/Large Coffee: $1.60/$1.85, Medium Latte: $3.35;
Outlet availability: Decent. They have several power strips throughout, but there are still a few spots in the place where you can’t reach an outlet.
Wifi: Yes. Closed network, password required.
Driving Distance from Owen: 0.2 miles (Winner closest indie coffee shop to Owen!)
Parking (Car): Yes, but it is a small lot. Best option is to walk from Owen.
Parking (Bike): No.
Food: They have a few cookies and muffins; also JJ’s is one part coffee shop and one part mini-grocery store. They sell things like granola bars, chips, beer, kegs (it’s actually where we get our kegs for Thursday Social), candy, paper towels, etc. Also of note is that they have international stuff from Italy, Belgium, Sweden, etc.
Scene: Majority Vanderbilt students. Almost everyone at JJ’s has their laptop open with papers spread out everywhere. Law/Divinity/Owen and undergrads all flock to this place.
Other Notes: JJ’s has 5 craft beers on tap, a great selection of loose leaf teas, and plays classical music quite a bit.

On Grades
It is a common trope here at business school that grades don’t matter.
Judging from the amount of hours that most students put in at the library, one might assume that this maxim is some sort of game theory-driven bluff to fool the meek and gullible away from the battlefield. For those of us who have spent a lifetime in a system that rewards only grades as a gauge of learning, in some cases fostering the perverse incentive to take easier and less challenging courses, it can be hard to break old habits.
But in business school, grades should not drive your course selection. Don’t opt out of Corporate Valuation or Derivatives if you’re concerned it will hurt your GPA, even if you consider yourself more of a “soft skills” person. This is your chance to learn this material from industry experts. For most of us, business school is an educational safety net in addition to a career reset button. It serves as a last chance to learn dense academic material in a “safe” setting. After this, almost all of our learning is “on the job,” meaning the ramifications of mistakes are a lot more dire than a poor grade.

Learning While Old[er]
Profiling is an ugly thing. Back in January, I was asked for my ID at the Peabody Commons late one night when I went to get a snack because I didn’t fit the “typical student profile.” I know I was profiled because when I asked the guard if I was being profiled, she said, “I’m doing all that.” After filing a complaint, I haven’t seen her there again. It appears she’s “doing all that” somewhere else now.
It is frustrating and anger provoking to be treated that way. It is particularly anger provoking to be treated that way on the campus of a university where I have paid $43,000 a year to attend. Capitalism lesson: service and respect flows in the opposite direction that the money flows.
I am happy to report that this is the opposite treatment that I have received at Owen and from my fellow Owenites.
Now, what I’m about to say is going to shock most of my classmates. I know because of the way I act, the music I listen to, my warped sense of humor, and my rugged and youthful appearance, most assume that I am about 16 years old. I am actually 47. Yes. 4 and 7, 47.

Sam & Zoe’s Coffee House and Café
Website: http://www.samandzoes.com/
Address:
Hours: Mon-Fri – 6:30a-8p; Sat – 7a-7p; Sun – 8a-7p
Seating: One of the smaller shops in Nashville, but good amount of tables given the size.
Outdoor Seating: Yes. Covered.
Selected Prices: Small/Large Coffee: $1.50/$2.05, Medium Latte: $3.05
Outlet availability: Decent. You gotta stick to the back wall.
Wifi: Sort of. They turn off the wifi from 10:30am-2pm. Sneaky way to keep the limited table space open during lunch time. I was able to pick up wifi from the gas station next door, but it kept going in and out.
Driving Distance from Owen: 4.3 Miles
Parking (Car): Yes, but limited.
Parking (Bike): No.
Food: Full breakfast and lunch menu. They get bagels from Star Bagel. They have breakfast burritos, oatmeal, granola, sandwiches, burgers, salads, etc.
Scene: Located close to quite a bit of residential so it has a neighborhood feel with a very diverse crowd.
Other Notes: The only indie coffee shop in Nashville with a drive-through window. Claims to be the second coffee house in Nashville.
