An Evening with Music Industry Executives

This week, Owen students had the exclusive honor of attending Vanderbilt Media Group’s (VMG) event “An Evening with Music Industry Executives.”

The VMG, a newly-relaunched Owen club devoted to serving students with a professional interest in media and entertainment, hosted a panel discussion and Q&A with senior music industry executives and luminaries hailing from record labels, artist business management, songwriting, publishing, and digital/social media.

Panelists included:

Hosted by industry legend Tim Dubois, this fascinating group discussed the inner workings and current state of a music industry famously in crisis, their visions for the future, how the industry might recover, and broader implications for media. The event was well-attended by a broad mix of first and second year students, who asked a number of insightful questions during the Q&A. Afterwards, a wine-and-cheese reception with live music took place, giving students the opportunity to mingle with the panelists. VMG is committed to hosting similar events in the future, covering different industries within media and entertainment.

Corporate Team Building is…. Fun?

Okay, I’ll admit it: the likelihood of The Owen Road appearing on the Most Played List of anyone’s iPod is slim. When you gather a motley crew of business school students, alumni, faculty and staff into a room and task them with composing and performing an original song about an MBA program, you don’t exactly expect  – or even , for that matter.

But let’s face it: that a mostly type-A group of accountants, marketers, finance whizzes, operations geniuses, and entrepreneurs was able to produce any music at all, let alone a catchy tune with lyrics that (mostly) make sense, is pretty remarkable. Such is the inspiration behind Kidbilly Music, and it made for an entertaining and memorable afternoon.

On a sunny Friday in February, Owen students, alumni, faculty and staff gathered in 106 for a unique team-building exercise. Gamely led by Kidbilly founder and namesake Billy Kirsch, we set about creating a tune that would change the Owen community forever — or, at least, provide for a few kindhearted laughs. We were inspired by our devotion to Owen and, as one student puts it in the resulting video, “free food and beer.”
