Reflections on the First Semester…

We got through it! Despite all the concern about failing Finance and finding time for our personal lives, we all survived and thrived through the first semester. Granted, it was a little rough those first few weeks of Mod 1 until I realized that I would need to schedule personal tasks, like going to the gym or getting groceries, into my Outlook calendar or my time would quickly be filled with meeting requests and other things would be neglected. But eventually, I figured that out, and occasionally I actually got to do the personal things I tried to plan!

This Mod was when we really started getting to know our classmates, during Thursday Socials, Tailgating events, and just spending time together in and outside of class. We have a wonderful class, and it’s been amazing to hear so many different perspectives as we discuss cases. In my LTO class, we had a former NASA employee who could give us insight into the culture as we went over our NASA case!

Fall Break was, well, not much of a break. The Brand Week events kept me at school for most of the week. However, it was great exposure to brand management at several companies. I particularly enjoyed hearing about the brand strategy for Brown Forman’s new Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey. And I felt lucky compared to the students who did the HealthCare immersion. They were at the hospital at all hours of the day for the entire week.

Mod 2 was a bit of a relief after the quant-heavy Mod 1, and it was my first opportunity to choose an elective. However, it quickly became clear that other obligations will fill the available time as club leadership positions went into effect and the internship search began to ramp up. Most of my evenings were filled with group meetings or Recruiter information sessions. We did take a break from all the work for our Halloween party at Dooley’s, which was also the first time most of us (1st years) had heard of Owen Follies – I’m definitely looking forward to seeing those photos at the end of the year.

Thanksgiving Break was a wonderful respite from the hectic schedule, but it made it that much more difficult to come back for three more weeks! Luckily, we had our epic Holiday Party at Cabana to end the Semester and make us forget about all the worries that had come before.

Takeaways from the first semester…
Make time for yourself and take care of your health – you do not want to be sick in the middle of finals.
Get your resume and cover letter work started early.
Take advantage of the knowledge the 2nd years can offer – ask them about classes and professors, about their internship search and summer experience. The information is invaluable.
Get to know the CMC Staff. They’re so willing to help and are a great resource in your internship search.
Network!! Take advantage of the breaks to reach out to alumni in your home city.

About Stephanie Dozier

Raised in Arkansas, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream of marrying Ryan Gosling. After working in entertainment for several years, we still hadn't met. Now I've returned to the south to study Brand Management and eat as much good southern cooking as possible before I start my new endeavor to be Reese Witherspoon’s bestie.
