P&G CEO Bob McDonald
Last week Owen students had the privilege of meeting Procter & Gamble CEO Bob McDonald at a speaking even on campus. The subject of his talk was values-based leadership in what he calls an increasingly VUCA world. (VUCA = volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous)
Along with giving out his email address, he provided his ten rules of successful leadership:
- Living a life driven by purpose is more meaningful and rewarding than meandering through life without direction. “Choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong.” – From the West Point Cadet Prayer
- Companies must do well to do good, and must do good to do well. P&G was the first company in the world to hire women in Saudi Arabia, and currently have 35 female employees. Due to the still constrained gender issues, the company had to install conference rooms with glass barriers that separates the men from the women. Additionally, because women in Saudi Arabia do not have the right to drive, P&G must hire male drivers to take the female employees around for work. It is inspiring and refreshing to hear about a company leading human rights issues around the globe and having a whatever-it-takes attitude to do what is right.
- Everyone wants to succeed and success is contagious. Don’t let the fact that leadership is time inefficient stop you from being the best manager or parent or friend.
- Putting people in the right job is one of the most important jobs of a leader. People like to do what they are good at, and will work that much harder when they are driven from inside themselves.
- Character is the most important trait of a leader. You must put the needs of the organization above your own and take responsibility for the results of the organization.
- Diverse groups of people are more innovative than homogenous groups. “Change almost always comes as a surprise because things don’t happen in straight lines. Connections are made by accident.” – James Burke
- Ineffective strategies, systems, and cultures are bigger barriers to achievement than the talents of people. Recruiting and training are top priorities.
- There will be some people in the organization who will not make it on the journey. A company’s commitment should be to its people as individuals – not simply employees.
- Organizations must renew themselves. Out of the original Fortune 50 companies in 1955, only nine are still on the list today. Like the parable of the boiled frog, the majority of successful companies don’t realize that the world is changing around them. What differentiates those who succeed from those who don’t is the ability to learn.
- The true test of a leader is the performance of the organization when he or she is absent, or after he or she departs. Be a leader that builds a clock – not just one that tells the time.

I attended this event as well, and I have to admit that Bob is an impressive man. His 10 rules were vividly developed by his remarkable ability to tell stories, but what I liked the most was in personable nature. I emailed him the next day and he responded immediately. I really enjoyed his candor. If you have the chance to see him speak, you should do it!
Dear Aaron,
I run the PR agency in Europe and I need quite desperately P&G’s CEO Bob McDonald’s email address, as i want to present him our revolutionary ICC (in-community channel). The aim of our in-house engineered ICC is to meet the wants of thrill-seeking individuals and groups by presenting brands / products when and where the memorable life experiences take place, in an amazingly charming way that has a very strong element of magic about it.
Applied properly, the ICC would increase P&G’s global sales of some of its beauty & grooming brands by as much as $1bill. annually. If I manage to get a deal with Mr. Bob McDonald done, you may count on my financial reward to you. I would use his email address for the purpose of sending him our partnership proposal only and I would not certainly disclose the origin of the email address.
I would very much appreciate your kind help.
Many thanks,

Hi Sinisa,
Were you successful in locating Bob McDonald’s email address? I’ve been trying to locate it on the web myself and have not had any luck thus far. If you could share it with me that would be fantastic.
Thank you!
Victoria
Gotta love how he mentioned our offices in Saudi Arabia!! Was a long diversity journey, but we did it!! Looking forward to finding a video of the presentation!
However, just wanted to note that P&G was the first FMCG company in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to hire women… And given that women are not able to drive in the country, families usually hire drivers, to take them around the city…
