Show Me Your…

Welcome to “Show me your…” where current Owen students open up their backpack, purse, locker, smartphone, tablet, or just about anything else and show you what’s inside.

To kick things off I’ll be showing you my backpack to reveal the gadgets and accessories that help me survive as an MBA student. I will admit some of this stuff is not completely necessary, but I kind of like being prepared for EVERYTHING.

1) Jansport Synchline 38 – I tried to use a messenger bag for a while in Mod I. I thought as a grad student I was somehow “above” backpacks, but my messenger bag just got overloaded. I have no shame about my backpack now and love having everything I need with me.

2) Lenovo S10-3 Netbook with rooCASE neoprene sleeve – I enjoy the mobility of my netbook and have found it to be able to handle all my computing needs. I bought the sleeve for cheap on Amazon and really like the extra pockets it has which is where I store my power cord.

3) Logitech M305 wireless mouse – I don’t like laptop touch pads, and the huge amount of time I spend on my laptop makes this an essential item.

4) SanDisk Sansa Clip – I sold my iPod touch before school. Angry Birds and Words with Friends were two distractions I did not want in business school. This mp3 player is great because it is small but holds plenty of music. It even came with a really small connector cord which I love.

5) Headphones – I like to listen to music while I study and take breaks on youtube or Netflix. I never leave home without some headphones. Also I keep my headphones in a carrying pouch. It helps keep them from getting tangled.

6) Texas Instruments BA II Plus Calculator – Every finance concentrator has a financial calculator. I feel like everyone else just uses their iPhone.

7) Nokia brick phone – I decided to save money while in school by dropping my data plan and downgrading phones. I think I’m one of only a handful of people who doesn’t have e-mail on their phone. I haven’t found it to be a problem, and I kind of like having a much smaller phone.

8 ) Phone Charger – Never know when my battery will run out. Just easier to keep it in my backpack.

9) Flash Memory Drives – I mostly use these to load presentations on the classroom computers.

10) Leatherman c33B – Yep, I’m from Texas. I carry a pocket knife.

11) 32oz Water bottle – Keeps me hydrated. I use my water bottle at Kegs as well. I’m saving the environment and reducing the amount of times I have to head back to the keg.

12) Books and Binders – I have tried to utilize my locker and not always carry every book and binder with me, but it just ended up being huge hassle. I find it easier to keep all my books and papers with me.

13) Checkbook – Clubs are always selling tickets to things, plus you have to buy classpaks once a Mod. Just easier to have the checkbook with me at school.

14) 3-way plug extender – I don’t ever need this up at school, but I go to coffee shops quite often and outlets there are at a premium. This item has saved me more than once.

15) Cloth – Great for cleaning my glasses or dirty computer screen

16) Mini-Stapler – One of my less necessary items, but I have used it from time to time.

17) Lots of Pens and Pencils – Can never have enough of these seeing as I’m always losing them.

18) Name plate – I’m actually super proud of myself that I haven’t lost this thing yet, and it is still in good shape. I thought it would be all wrinkly and bent by the end of the Mod IV.

19) Owen Business Cards – I really need to get a business card holder since these are starting to look a little ragged.

20) Owen name tag

Like my stuff? Think my stuff sucks? Think you have cooler stuff and want to talk about it? Let’s hear it in the comments. If you’re an Owen student and want to be featured in this space let me or another Owen Blogger know.

About Doug Midkiff

I’m really good at Excel. I’m also a Texan, which seems to be a trend among OwenBloggers these days (you can’t stop us, you can only hope to contain us). After graduating from Texas, (Hook’em) I spent four years as a financial analyst before finding my way to Owen where I’m concentrating in finance with an emphasis on real estate. I love my wife, indie coffee shops, disc golf, soccer, web comics, Google maps, urbanism, sustainability, and warm weather.

It switched from nerd chic to flat-out nerd right at the 15 & 16 combo of cloth and mini-stapler (both of which I admit to carrying around as well). I have a feeling my bag is twice and heavy and half as useful.
