A Successful First Year as a Significant Other

Upon becoming the partner of a new business school student, you will lose spending time with one another. It is imperative that you lay down the ground rules before school actually begins. For instance, my partner and I decided that sharing meals was important to us, so we aim to eat at least 1 meal per day together. We also decided that one day each weekend was just for us, so he had to pick a day he would not schedule group meetings, etc. Of course, there was some flexibility. I, in return, attended every social event that he had to/wanted to go to so we could spend time together. It was the best thing I ever did. I made friends with some of my partner’s fellow students and their partners. These people are my friends in Nashville now. So I guess the message is: 1. Set ground rules and 2. Get involved.

The second rule, I feel, is as important as the first. If you don’t get involved, it will be difficult for you to make new friends and that in turn will put a strain on your relationship. Because I was so involved, I was able to not only make friends but many, many acquaintances as well. As a partner of a current first year Owen student I had the opportunity to attend this year’s Capitalist Ball. Sounds so lovely, doesn’t it? Well, it was. It was a fun filled night of drinking, eating, socializing, and dancing. The men looked dashing in their tuxedos while the ladies looked gorgeous in their gowns.  The food was delicious and plentiful. The drinks were free and of a wide variety. The live band was a funky cover band that covered everything from the Temptations to Britney Spears. However, I must admit the key to my enjoyment of this evening was most certainly that I knew a plethora of people there with whom I could socialize with, especially while my partner was off socializing with other people or boring my head off while talking all about business school. Therefore, as I stated before make sure you get involved and hopefully next year you will agree with my assessment that the Capitalist Ball is an event you don’t want to miss.
