The Unofficial Team

Part of the business school experience is learning how to work in a team.  Initially in core courses these teams are assigned.  For some, this can be an entirely new experience altogether.  Most teams do well figuring out how to be the most efficient and effective given the members varying skill-sets.  Some teams struggle with this, but I would argue this is a good learning experience as well.  Over the course of my first year I have been on many different teams offering different experiences and perspectives on how teams work together to jointly accomplish a goal.

The team that you don’t often think or hear about, nor did I consider prior to arriving at Owen, is the unofficial team.  In some classes, professors assign individual cases or problem sets, but don’t prohibit and, for some professors, even encourage working and debating with classmates about the assignment.  It is important to build relationships with your classmates because even one more set of eyes or a different opinion can be incredibly helpful when trying to tackle these challenging topics.  Business school is not just about what you learn in the classroom, but what you are continually learning from your classmates.  It’s a two-way street of mutual contributions, the more you give, the more you get.

This past weekend was Welcome Weekend and as a result of these initial interactions, the foundations of some of these unofficial teams are beginning to be formed.
