There’s no doubt that first year Mod II has been more challenging than Mod I and Ninad addresses those differences well. Over the course of this mod I’ve started to notice assignment fatigue in my business school colleagues (and myself). There’s a lot to conquer in and out of the classroom and it can wear you down quickly. To combat this you have two choices. The first is to buckle up and plough ahead with your sights set squarely on the finish line as you continue to tell yourself “It’s only 4 more weeks… It’s only 3 more weeks…” Despite mods only being 7 weeks long, this is kind of like saying, “Serenity now. Serenity now.” As one character alludes to in that episode of Seinfeld it’s, “Serenity now. Insanity later.”
The second is to take a balanced life approach. Whether that’s working out, playing on an intramural sports team, volunteering, or perhaps going hang-gliding with the newly formed Owen Extreme Sports and Outdoor Adventure Club, you need to find time for yourself in non-academic activities to focus on as well. Last Saturday, I was debating whether I should accept an invitation to play paintball with first and second years or if my time would be better spent in the library getting work done. Through the car ride out to the paintball complex I was nervous about my decision, but thankfully I was with other people so I couldn’t just turn the car around. During the several hours of paintball games, I got a much needed mental break. It is my competitive nature that motivates me to do well and over those several hours I became solely focused on protecting myself, protecting my team, and “killing” the enemy. It is easy to lose sight of personal goals or activities while you are in business school. However, these activities provide a break for your mind that in turn will benefit your academic pursuits as well.
