About this time a year ago I had just given my GMAT. In fact I gave my GMAT
on Sept 8. I remember the date vividly because after my exam I came home and
watched the MNF season opening double header on ESPN.
At that point I only knew that I wanted to go to business school. I didn't
know what exactly I wanted to do in business school. I didn't know which
schools I was interested in. There will be a lot of prospective students out
there who want to apply for Fall 10 and are in the same position. But don't
panic. Believe me, you have enough time. The first order of business for you
should be to start attending information sessions of various schools. Go on the
websites of schools that you think you will be interested in and look if they
have an event in your city. Many schools have events internationally so even
the international students can benefit from this. This gives you a chance to
gauge what are the strengths and weaknesses of the school.
The other thing I would recommend is attend some MBA fair. I attended world
MBA tour. It basically had about 40-50 schools under one roof so you could
gather information about lots of schools in one go. Some of the schools also
offer interviews at these events. Some schools have just an informal interview.
When I visited this tour it was last week of September. I met an Owen
representative at one of these events and also had an interview. I thought it
was one of those informal interviews so I was not at all prepared for it. At that
point I was not even sure if I was going to apply to Owen. But at the end of
the interview I found out that if I do apply, the interview I just had would
count. Fortunately it all worked out for me. But bottom line is if you do
have an interview at one of these events, take it seriously. Your first
impression is the most important one.
So start early and start now. But whenever you start remember one thing, it’s
never too late.
